SAFE & HAPPY SCHOOL POLICY
As a school community we will stand up against bullying thereby ensuring the safety of our school members.

The School’s Stand
As members of the school’s community, we believe

bullet

Bullying in any form will not be tolerated

bullet

All members of the school community are committed to ensuring a safe and happy school, so that personal growth and self esteem are promoted to assist in the achievement of learning outcomes

bullet

All members of the school community have the right to feel safe and be treated with respect within the school environment.

What is bullying?

Bullying is repeated oppression, psychological or physical, of a less powerful person by a more powerful person or group of persons, characterised by

bullet

Desire to hurt

bullet

Action intended to hurt

bullet

Someone is hurt

bullet

There is an imbalance of power

bullet

It is unjustified

bullet

It is typically repeated

bullet

It is enjoyed by the perpetrator

Examples of bullying include

bullet

Malicious and continual harassment

bullet

Threats of violence

bullet

Verbal threats in a gang

bullet

Verbal abuse such as name calling

bullet

physical violence such as hitting, punching, pushing

bullet

Using anything as a weapon, eg. Pencil, ruler, bag etc

bullet

Destroying another person’s property

bullet

Spreading rumours about another person

bullet

Taking another person’s possessions

bullet

Writing offensive material about a person on desks, walls etc

bullet

Teasing someone about their appearance or their racial background

bullet

Threatening to harm another person

bullet

Isolating others from a group

bullet

Sexual harassment

How can we stand up against bullying?
As a school community we will stand up against bullying thereby ensuring the safety of our school members.

For this to happen the staff will need to

bullet

Raise awareness of bullying, its prevalence and harmfulness, in the whole school community

bullet

Implement curriculum-based personal development programs which will develop social skills, self esteem strategies to deal with bullying

bullet

Be role models in word and action at all times

bullet

Be observant and aware of signs of distress or suspected incidents of bullying

bullet

Make efforts to remove occasions for bullying by actively patrolling during supervision duty

bullet

Arrive at class on time

bullet

Listen and show empathy to someone who reports being bullied

bullet

Planning room to be utilised when bullying occurs in the playground

bullet

Follow up at a later date those who have been bullied to ensure the victims have not been subjected to more bullying.

For this to happen the students will need to

bullet

Be encouraged to practise pro-social behaviour in our school

bullet

Let teachers know if they or someone else is being bullied

bullet

Ensure they are not bystanders to incidents of bullying but instead try to assist the person being bullied, if they feel they can do so without being hurt.

For this to happen the parents need to be aware that

bullet

They need to support the whole school community’s stance against bullying

bullet

If necessary, they can discuss any problems their child may have at school with teaching staff

bullet

Work together with school staff to ensure that their child is happy at school.

The Planning Room
The planning room is to be used as a planning place for major playground and classroom incidents.

These incidents include

bullet

Any bullying offence

bullet

Violence where someone is intentionally hurt

bullet

Verbal abuse of teachers

bullet

A situation where the teacher or child cannot deal with the problem at that time

bullet

Swearing

bullet

Repeated and persistent non compliance of a school rule

bullet

Leaving the school grounds

In the event of a child being sent to the  planning room,  the following procedure will occur

bullet

The child is sent to the planning room

bullet

Child fills out a planning sheet and the plan is discussed with the teacher

bullet

Entry is made onto the documentation cards which are kept in the planning room

bullet

Teacher who has sent a child to the planning room makes notification into a “planning room book” which will also be kept in the planning room

bullet

Teacher on planning room to check with this book to see that the child’s story and the teacher’s story are the same

bullet

When a child is sent to the planning room, another child accompanies that child to collect the planning room book so that the teacher can make an immediate entry into that book.

Card System

bullet

Grade leaders and class teachers will be notified if a child attends the Planning Room, if time allows

bullet

If a child fails to attend the Planning Room they will receive a Planning Card.

bullet

Cards will be issued for children attending the Planning Room to follow up and discuss the plan, restitution and course of action.

Repeated Visits – After the third visit to the Planning Room parents are notified by mail. The Case Manager reports all cases of concern to the Welfare Committee.
